What is in aloe that merits such praise? Some can't give a sound explanation why aloe works against cancer. Skeptics just scratch their heads in exasperation.
You'll be pleased to know that studies from both the alternative therapy camp and the scientific community have shown similar explanations on the benefits of aloe vera in cancer treatment.
Aloe vera affects cancer cells in three ways. One is by fortifying the immune system. The second mechanism is through apoptosis (cell suicide). And thirdy, aloe enhances the cytotoxic efficacy of chemotherapy drugs on cancer cells.
Intensifies Immune System
Aloe vera boosts your body's immune system. In this manner, it eradicates cancer cells through the activation of your body's scavenger cells -- the macrophages and including white blood cells and T-cells.
International Immunopharmacology published research performed on aloe in 1995. The study gave evidence that aloe polysaccharides are the secret of its potent macrophage activity that kills cancer cells.
Additionally, lectin (a substance in aloe) stimulates the production of macrophages. When macrophages attack foreign bodies, they naturally release immune activating and anticancer substances such as interferons, interleukines and tumor necrosis factor.
Direct Effect on Cancer Cells Through Apoptosis
Various researches identified the compound aloe-emodin, a hydroxyanthraquinone, in the aloe leaf. Through controlled experiments, researchers discovered that aloe-emodin initiates apoptosis or cell suicide in cancer cells. Your body's aged cells usually commit suicide to prevent replicating worn out genetic material. The opposite happens with cancer cells. Despite their aberrant genetic material, cancer cells replicate at a continuously faster pace generating bizarre lethal cells that multiply and form tumor masses.
This was proven in a study conducted by Pecere and colleagues at the University of Genova, Italy. Their work revealed that aloe-emodin inhibited tumor activity in neuroectodermal tumors. The mechanism by which aloe-emodin worked is through "the induction of apoptosis." Interestingly, the research further discovered that aloe-emodin attacks cancer cells exclusively and spares normal cells.
Still another study, this time at the China Medical University in Taiwan, conducted by Ya-yin Chen et al demonstrated that emodin, aloe-emodin and rhein killed cancer cells through apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in human tongue cancer cells. Surprisingly, the research also determined that aloe-emodin induces DNA damage to human tongue cancer cells.
There was also a study giving evidence that aloe lowers the risks of smokers to develop lung cancer.
Enhancement of Cytotoxic Effects of Anti-Cancer Drugs
Some physicians or oncologists combine aloe vera gel with standard chemotherapeutic regimens. Specifically, two chemotherapy drugs -- cyclophosphamide and 5-fluorouracil -- have been combined with aloe to enhance their anti-tumor activity.
In 2009, a clinical study was conducted in Italy among 240 cancer patients with metastatic lung, bowel and stomach cancers. One half of these patients were given aloe vera juice thrice a day in conjunction with their chemotherapy regimen. The other half had only their standard chemotherapy. Results revealed that patients undergoing standard treatment with aloe supplementation manifested a better quality of life, higher survival rates (more than 3 years) and lesser chemotherapy side effects.

Aloe vera gel is consumed as a food supplement to promote health and prevent illnesses. If you're a cancer patient and choose aloe vera as a supplement, it is always sensible to inform your health care provider.
